Using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client is the most efficient way to manage your website's files. While the general principles are the same across different applications, the specific steps can vary. This guide provides detailed, visual instructions for setting up two of the most popular clients: FileZilla and Cyberduck.
Before you begin, you will need your FTP connection credentials: Host, Username, Password, and Port. We strongly recommend using SFTP (Port 22) for a secure, encrypted connection.
FileZilla
FileZilla is a powerful and popular free FTP client available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. For easier access, we recommend using its "Site Manager" to save your connection details.
Step 1: Open the Site Manager
Launch FileZilla. In the top menu, click on File, then select Site Manager.
Step 2: Create a New Site
In the Site Manager window that appears, click the New Site button. You can then give this connection a recognizable name, such as your website's domain name.
Step 3: Enter Your Connection Details
With your new site selected, fill in the fields on the right-hand General tab:
- Protocol: Select SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol from the dropdown menu.
- Host: Enter your server address (e.g.,
yourdomain.comor an IP address). - Port: Enter 22.
- Logon Type: Choose Normal.
- User: Enter your FTP username.
- Password: Enter your password.
Step 4: Connect to the Server
Click the Connect button. The first time you connect, FileZilla may show a security warning about an "Unknown host key." This is normal; simply check the box to "Always trust this host" and click OK. You will now be connected to your server.
Cyberduck
Cyberduck is a very user-friendly FTP client for both Windows and macOS, known for its clean interface.
Step 1: Open a New Connection
Launch Cyberduck. In the top-left corner of the main window, click the Open Connection button.
Step 2: Enter Your Connection Details
A dialog box will appear. You'll need to configure the following settings:
- From the top dropdown menu, select SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol).
- Server: Enter your server address.
- Port: Enter 22.
- Username: Enter your FTP username.
- Password: Enter your password.
Step 3: Connect and Save
Click the Connect button. Similar to FileZilla, you may see a prompt to trust the server's fingerprint on your first connection. Click Allow to proceed. Once connected, you can save these details for future use by clicking the Bookmark menu and selecting New Bookmark.
While this guide covers the most common clients, the settings for other applications like AnyClient are very similar. If you've double-checked your credentials from the Control Panel and are still unable to connect, our support team is ready to help.
